Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS)

The PATHS initiative is a whole school, evidence based, social and emotional programme for Reception, Year One and Year Two pupils. It has been proven to be successful in enhancing the social competence and social understanding of children, in addition to facilitating educational processes in the classroom.

This programme follows a set and organised structure in which two lessons are delivered every week with clear objectives, in a sequence in which concepts can be developed and built on. Because this is a whole school initiative all staff are also trained in the concepts, principles and language of PATHS and we therefore all apply the same approach throughout the school. Parents are also invited into school to receive training so that they can implement policies at home if the wish to.

Part of this initiative is our 'Child of the Day' - a child is picked in each class, every day to be Child of the Day. This allows them certain privileges - they are able to sit on a special chair during carpet times, are always first in line and are allowed to choose a friend to sit with them at a special table in the hall at lunchtime. They are also given compliments by their classmates, and have to compliment themselves and a certificate is given to them which is sent home, giving families an opportunity to participate by writing their own compliments for their child.

The British Values of Rule of Law, Tolerance, Democracy, Individual Liberty and Mutual Respect are embedded throughout PATHS, in addition to it covering aspects of spiritual, moral , social and cultural learning.
